From the Bard Graduate Center:
A new exhibit on the visual culture of nineteenth century New York City will open on Friday, September 19, 2014 at the Bard Graduate Center Gallery. “Visualizing 19th Century New York“ explores how New York’s cultural entrepreneurs made sense of the metropolis through woodcuts, aquatints, lithographs, and photographs. The exhibition will feature four producers in particular, Matthew Brady, Edward Anthony, Currier & Ives, and the Harper Brothers.
Visitors will have access to a number of interactive devices as well. Intended to provide a richer historical context, the interactives allow guests to explore P.T. Barnum’s American Museum as well as the image-making techniques used in the nineteenth century. A digital publication places objects, landmarks and thematic material on the 1851 Matthew Dripps, Map of the City of New York, and includes essays on a number of social and historical topics.
