The 1772 Foundation, partnering for the sixth year with the New Jersey Historic Trust, awarded historic preservation grants totaling $290,000 to 25 private nonprofit organizations in New Jersey. The grants ranged in amount from $2,038 to the grant maximum of $15,000. 11 of the 25 organizations received the maximum grant amount. Each grant recipient was required to have matching funds for its project. Grants also were awarded in Connecticut and Rhode Island.
Grants were provided for exterior work: painting, surface restoration, fire/security systems, repairs to/restoration of porches, roofs and windows, repairs to foundations and sills, and chimney and masonry repointing.
Dorothy Guzzo, Executive Director, New Jersey Historic Preservation Trust, noted, “We are so grateful to the 1772 Foundation for its continued support of New Jersey’s historic sites. While helping to preserve a variety of wonderful historic sites, this funding has also been instrumental in leveraging private philanthropy.”
President of the 1772 Foundation, B. Danforth Ely, stated “Our small matching grants provide important funding for preventive maintenance and accurate historic restoration. Grants of this nature are relatively scarce.” He added, “The organizations receiving these grants must have a match in-hand at the time of application, thus demonstrating their commitment to preserving their buildings and local community support.”
The 1772 Foundation was named in honor of its first restoration project, Liberty Hall in Union, NJ, which was built in 1772 and is the ancestral home of the Livingston and Kean families. The Growing Stage — The Children’s Theatre of New Jersey (Netcong), $9,920 toward security system installation for the Palace Theatre
The Highlands Nature Friends (Ringwood), $8,500 toward chimney repairs and installation of gutters and downspouts for the Camp Midvale Dormitory Building
Historic Cold Spring Village (Lower Township), $15,000 toward repairs and painting for five buildings
InfoAge (Wall Township), $10,000 toward window repairs for the Camp Evans Historic District Marconi Hotel
Macculloch Hall Historical Museum (Morristown), $15,000 toward repointing four chimneys
Morris County Historical Society (Morristown), $15,000 toward roof restoration for Acorn Hall
Morris Museum (Morristown), $15,000 toward portico roof restoration for Twin Oaks Mansion
Morven Museum & Garden (Princeton), $15,000 toward application of lime wash coating for Morven
Oakeside Bloomfield Cultural Center (Bloomfield), $9,680 toward porch repairs and painting for the Oakes Estate
Old Barracks Association (Trenton), $12,500 toward window repair and painting for the Old Barracks

Whitesbog Preservation Trust (Browns Mills), $7,800 toward cedar siding installation for a worker’s cottage
