Public Art Installation Details History of the LGBTQ Movement in Philadelphia

“And Into The Streets,” a public art project by artist Rami George represents archival images and materials from the discontinued LGBTQ news source, Au Courant (1982 – 2000). The installation is now on view until August 31 at Kahn Park at 11th and Pine Streets in Philadelphia’s Gayborhood.

George threads together photographs of underrepresented histories and voices that depict a queer cultural memory of Philadelphia life, many of which were never published. The project builds upon the time George spent in the John J. Wilcox, Jr. Archives at the William Way LGBT Community Center, Philadelphia’s most extensive collection of LGBTQ material and ephemera. The location of the installation is also significant. Louis Kahn Park is one of the only public spaces in Philadelphia’s Gayborhood that was historically a gathering place for the community.
