Lancaster County’s Historical Society & President James Buchanan’s Wheatland in Lancaster, PA, will be offering The President James Buchanan National Symposium from September 18-19, 2015. Registration is open to everyone. Adults are $50 and students are $10. The Saturday boxed lunch is optional and costs $12.

The theme for this Symposium is The Worlds of Thaddeus Stevens & James Buchanan: Race, Gender & Politics in the Civil War Era. The Symposium will use Congressman Stevens and President Buchanan as unique lenses to look at nineteenth-century American political history through an in-depth examination of party formation and re-formation; slavery, race and civil rights; and the role of gender in nineteenth-century politics. Participants will have an opportunity to interact with three moderated panels of historians on the second day of the Symposium.

Keynote historians, Bruce C. Levine, Ph.D. of the University of Illinois and James Oakes, Ph.D. of the City University of New York, will join moderator, Randall Miller, Ph. D. of St. Joseph’s University in a conversation about Buchanan’s and Stevens’s Political World & the Effect of Borders.
