Preservation New Jersey is a state-wide non-profit that–as its name rightly implies–advocates to preserve the rich heritage of New Jersey’s cities and towns. At Preservation New Jersey volunteers and paid staff support efforts to preserve local landmarks by providing workshops and technical assistance for those interested in getting their hands dirty. But that’s not all they do.
Each year PNJ shines a giant public spotlight on the top ten sites in New Jersey that have especially uncertain futures through the 10 Most Endangered Historic Places list. The 10 Most list is created of the people, by the people, and for the people, relying on nominations from New Jersey citizens who care deeply about saving the distinct character of the Garden State.
The 10 Most list demonstrates the fact that preservation isn’t just about saving the grand historic homesteads of the rich and/or famous– this year you’ll find historic landscapes, multiple African American sites, civic buildings, archeological sites, and even rail stations declared as places that need saving. But don’t worry old house lovers—there’s some noteworthy residential architecture in there too!
