Plans for New President Lincoln Museum in Washington, DC

The National Park Service (NPS) announced on Monday, February 20, plans to add an immersive museum beneath the Lincoln Memorial. The project will create a 15,000 square foot exhibit space that will explore the history of President Abraham Lincoln and the memorial that honors him.

According to the NPS, the project was first announced in 2016 with an $18.5 million donation from businessman and philanthropist David M. Rubenstein. Including Rubenstein’s donation, the National Park Foundation has contributed more than $43 million to fund the project, with $38.5 million gifted from private donors. The NPS has invested more than $26 million toward the project.

Construction is expected to start in March of this year with completion targeted for 2026, in time for the 250th anniversary of American Independence.
