Philadelphia’s African American Museum Moving to the Benjamin Franklin Parkway

The City of Philadelphia announced that the African American Museum will move to the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. The future location is a 240,000-square-foot historic building at 1801 Vine Street and next to the Parkway Central branch of the Free Library of Philadelphia. No timeline has been announced for the final move.

The African American Museum in Philadelphia (AAMP) was founded in 1976 and is the first institution constructed by a major U.S. city to preserve, interpret and exhibit the heritage and culture of African Americans. The AAMP will join institutions such as the Philadelphia Museum of Art, The Franklin Institute, and the Barnes Foundation on Logan Square and on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway.
