Powelton Village is a neighborhood in West Philadelphia made up of Victorian-era rowhouses located in the University City section of West Philadelphia. In 2019, the Powelton Village Civic Association, an all-volunteer organization dedicated to making Powelton Village a “better place to live and work,” began discussions on establishing a historic district for the neighborhood.
The Philadelphia Historical Commission approved the Powelton Village Historic District in November. Eight hundred seventeen buildings constructed between 1851 and 1931 will be protected from demolition. Homeowners will be limited to certain modifications to the exterior of their homes. An additional eighty “non-contributing” properties in the area that were not built within that timeframe will be subject to review to ensure that they are compatible with the “character of the district,” according to The Philadelphia Inquirer.
The Powelton Village district is the largest “since the 2003 approval of a district in Old City.”
