Penn Museum’s newest gallery, Eastern Mediterranean Gallery: Crossroads of Cultures, opened on November 19. The gallery explores a cosmopolitan hub of diverse cultures whose “innovations shaped today’s world.”
According to Penn Museum, the Eastern Mediterranean has been a “crossroads of cultural exchange between diverse peoples” for over 4,000 years. Merchants, migrants, and soldiers traveled to the Eastern Mediterranean to raise monuments to kings and gods, sail ships across the sea, and share ideas.
The gallery demonstrates the creativity of the region’s distinctive material culture shaped by conflict and collaboration. It holds 400 artifacts from Penn Museum’s excavations, replica artifacts that guests can interact with, and much more.
