Next month the Philadelphia Area Consortium for Special Collections Libraries (PACSCL) will hold an online conference exploring a century of women’s activism leading up to the passage of the 19th Amendment.
“In Her Own Right: Activist Women, 1820-1920” honors the centennial of the 19th Amendment and celebrates five years of work on the In Her Own Right project. This project initially focused on building a searchable database of primary source documents related women’s political work and activism in the Greater Philadelphia region. In the next phase of the project, archivists are working on building out the database with an emphasis on documents related to women who are underrepresented in the historical record, including Black, Indigenous, and differently-abled women. In Her Own Right currently includes over 130,000 images of documents from nineteen PACSCL members.
The virtual conference will be held on March 18 and 19, 2021. Sessions cover topics such as professional women, the anti-slavery movement, and women’s suffrage in New Mexico. Martha S. Jones, Society of Black Alumni Presidential Professor, Professor of History, and a Professor at the SNF Agora Institute at The Johns Hopkins University, will deliver the keynote speech. PACSCL welcomes historians, teachers, activists, feminists, and all members of the general public to join.
