NY Group Crowdsources Nominations for Women’s History Monuments

The campaign titled "She Built NYC!" is open to all residents of New York City. Nominations can include individual women or events in women's history specific to the New York area.

The non-profit group Women.NYC, which helps women in New York City obtain affordable housing, start their own business, and negotiate pay increases, amongst other services, is now seeking nominations for women’s history monuments. The campaign titled “She Built NYC!” is open to all residents of New York City. Nominations can include individual women or events in women’s history specific to the New York area. Nominations will be accepted until August 1.

The campaign is one of several in recent years to attempt to address the lack of diversity in urban public art.  A similar campaign in Philadelphia, the Monument Lab, created a temporary monument to the city’s women in Fall, 2017. Artist Sharon Hayes crowdsourced nominations for future monuments to the city’s women’s history from her site at Rittenhouse Square.
