The American Battlefield Protection Program (ABPP) has awarded $1.359 million in grants to 21 projects. The monies will be used in the preservation and protection of battlefield lands in 14 states. Special congratulations to grant awardees from the mid-Atlantic region:
The County of Gloucester in New Jersey will receive $46,200 for an archaeological survey and mapping of Fort Mercer at the site of the Battle of Red Bank. The study will include a Phase I archaeological survey, mapping, shovel testing, and small-scale Phase II study including the opening of several test unites.
The County of Loudoun in Virginia and Maryland will receive $60,000 for a boundary expansion amendment of the current 76 acre National Historic Landmark at the Ball’s Bluff Battlefield and National Cemetery to include approximately 2,900 acres.
The Friends of the Fishkill Supply Depot in New York will receive $24,600 for a project to create maps that depict archaeological features of the Fishkill Supply Depot. The maps will include a historical overview, archaeological inventory, and topographic features of the site.
Lakes to Locks Passage, Inc. will receive $55,000 to develop interpretive materials linking key battles fought in northeaster New York and Vermont during the 1775-77 campaigns of the American Revolution. The project will develop a thematic guidebook, multimedia interpretation and a “Toolkit for Battlefield Stewardship” and includes six Priority I and eight Priority II battlefields. The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation will receive $80,000 to develop a cultural resource survey to inventory and locate the cultural resources of the Battle of Bennington. The site will be examined using historical accounts and GIS analysis; site boundaries will be re-delineated. Known and newly discovered resources will be inventoried and entered into a GIS database. Ultimately, nominations to both the State Register of Historic Places and National Register of Historic Places will be prepared.
Paoli Battlefield Preservation Fund, Inc of Pennsylvania will receive $58,500 to fully document and authenticate prior findings related to the battle, document new findings, and establish the context of the battle in order to update the battlefield’s National Register of Historic Places documentation.
The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission will receive $52,400 to document the location and boundaries of the Thompson’s Island battlefield site through archaeological metal detector survey.
The Princeton Battlefield Area Preservation Society of New Jersey will receive $47,100 to conduct an archaeological study on 29 acres at the Battle of Princeton and to prepare an application to include the property in the American Revolution-Stonybrook Settlement Historic District.
The Research Foundation for the State University of New York will receive $28,600 to develop a strategic preservation plan for Newtown and Chemung Battlefields, as well as build consensus among stakeholders. The project includes conducting civic engagement meetings, developing a consensus on a historical narrative, and addressing questions and concerns of community members about preservation options.
