Yesterday, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signed legislation moving New York State History Month from November to October.
Legislators realized that many of New York’s important historical sites, including most State historic sites, were closed during November. These sites could not benefit from the increased attention paid to state history during the month. Governor Cuomo said, “Given that many historic sites and cultural organizations are closed in November, it makes sense to designate October as our state’s history month – giving people more opportunities to experience and learn about New York’s contributions to our nation’s progress and the arts.”
State lawmakers praised the move. They believe that the change will make historical sites more accessible to the public and increase the impact of New York State History Month.
New York State History Month was established in 1977 as an opportunity for historical institutions to publicize the importance of preserving and learning about state history.
