National Council on Public History Recognizes Excellence in the Field at Annual Conference

On Saturday, April 22, 2017, NCPH recognized several Mid-Atlantic area professionals for their work in public history.

On Saturday, April 22, the National Council on Public History distributed the following awards to professionals and institutions in the Mid-Atlantic region during the NCPH annual conference in Indianapolis, Indiana. MARCH extends warm congratulations to all the recipients.

Lonnie G. Bunch, III, inaugural director of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture, received the Robert Kelley Memorial Award, honoring distinguished and outstanding achievements by individuals, institutions, nonprofit or corporate entities for having made significant inroads in making history relevant to individual lives of ordinary people outside of academia.

Prisons Today: Questions in the Age of Mass Incarceration, Eastern State Penitentiary, Philadelphia, honorable mention – Outstanding Public History Project Award, for work completed within the previous two calendar years that contributes to a broader public reflection and appreciation of the past or that serves as a model of professional public history practice.

Michelle Moon, Newark Museum, Interpreting Food at Museums and Historic Sites, honorable mention – NCPH Book Award, recognizing outstanding scholarship that addresses the theory and/or practice of public history or that includes the products of public history work.

Phillip Seitz, a social historian in Philadelphia, for “History Matters: What Happens When African Americans Confront Their Difficult Past,” The Public Historian Vol 38, No 2 – G. Wesley Johnson Award for most outstanding article appearing in the journal during the previous volume year.

Chris Fite, University of Pennsylvania, Graduate Student Travel Award.
