National Archive facility in Philadelphia will close in 2014

From the National Archives:

The Archivist of the Unite States has announced the permanent closure of three National Archives facilities.  Philadelphia is currently home to two locations, a records center at Townsend Road, and a smaller “storefront” facility at 900 Market Street.  Given the proximity of the two spaces, the Market Street location will close in FY 2014.  The archival materials—under 5,000 cubic feet— will be moved to Townsend Road.  Additionally, the research room at Townsend Road will be modified to provide better access to researchers.  The expectation is that community outreach programs will also continue from this location.  Employees based at the Market Street facility will be transferred to Townsend Road, or telework locations.

The National Archives is also consolidating facilities in Fort Worth, Texas and permanently closing the facility Anchorage, Alaska.  The Anchorage records will be transferred to the National Archives in Seattle, Washington.  The less than 12,000 cubic feet of records will be digitized and placed online so as to remain available to Alaskans.

The closures are part of continuing “budget adjustments;” it is believed the closures will save an estimated $1.3 million annually.
