Kate Epstein, professor of history at Rutgers University, Camden, and Robyn C. Spencer, professor of history at the City University of New York, have been chosen for the 2018 Frederick Burkhardt Residential Fellowship. Dr. Epstein is the author of Torpedo: the Military-Industrial Complex in the United States and Great Britain (Harvard University Press, 2014) and will use the fellowship to complete her second book. In this work, she intends to explore the relationship between national security, secrecy, and liberal values. Dr. Spencer recently published her first book, The Revolution has Come: Black Power, Gender, and the Black Panther Party in Oakland. She will continue her research on Black Liberation politics during her fellowship year.
The Burkhardt Fellowship is awarded annually by the American Council of Learned Societies, supported by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation They are awarded to scholars who have recently earned tenure. It allows recipients to take up yearlong residency at institutions with collections and resources conducive to their research. Both Spencer and Epstein will take up residencies at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey. Dr. Esptein’s will run for the 2018-19 academic year and Dr. Spencer’s for the 2020-21 academic year.
