The Jewish Museum in New York City will open its latest exhibit, Veiled Meanings: Fashioning Jewish Dress on Friday, November 3. The exhibit is the first comprehensive display of Jewish dress in the United States and will feature over one hundred articles of clothing from Jewish communities around the world dating from the eighteenth to the twentieth centuries. Visitors can discover the diversity of global Jewish communities as well as their internal social stratification. The focus of the exhibit is on four major themes: the veils of Central Asian Jewish women, the global migration of Jewish communities, the craftsmanship of the traditional garments, and garments created to invoke memory of the dead.
