The International Coalition of Sites of Conscience (ICSC) was founded in 1999 and has transformed how historic sites, museums, and memory initiatives view themselves and their roles in their community. These vital organizations are dedicated to using memory to promote more equitable, just, and peaceful societies.
ICSC’s toolkit Correcting the Record: Fostering More Inclusive Historical Narratives was published in February 2023 and is a guide on implementing internal changes at Sites of Conscience to create more inclusive operating practices and policies. According to ICSC, “through cross-regional peer exchange, one-on-one mentoring, and capacity building, six Sites of Conscience in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Caribbean tested and refined the Correcting the Record methodology. They aim to support Sites of Conscience and similar organizations, “recalibrate their practices, approaches, and repositories” to “amplify marginalized voices, promote more inclusive and equitable public narratives, and mitigate societal discrimination and exclusion.”
Correcting the Record is a methodology, a commitment, an imperative, and helps transform sites and their communities by ensuring that absences in policies and programming are amended.
