IMLS Announces National Medal for Museum and Library Service Winners

The Institute of Museum and Library Services announced the 2011 National Medal for Museum and Library Service Recipients on October 25.  The award is given to institutions that demonstrate innovative approaches to public service and community outreach.  Each year, IMLS selects five museums and five libraries to receive this honor.  The winners are selected by the Director if IMLS, following an open nomination process and based on the recommendations of the National Museum and LIbrary Services Board.

The Mid-Atlantic Region is represented by The Brooklyn Museum of Brooklyn, NY and The Erie Art Museum of Erie, PA.   The Brooklyn Museum was recognized as serving a diverse population of citizens, and as a national role model for innovative visitor engagement techniques.  Offering art exhibitions and classes as well as music and dance programs, the Erie Art Museum is the only comprehensive arts facility in northwestern Pennsylvania.  It is recognized for excellence in providing traditional museum exhibit experiences, but also for reaching beyond its doors to challenge the perception of what constitutes art.

The full press release and the National list of winners is available on the IMLS website.
