What is it about abandoned mental health institutions and prisons that capture our imaginations? In their discussion, “Haunted Histories, Hallowed Ground,” Kelly George and Anne Parsons address this issue, considering what we can learn from these pasts that haunt our present. Just in time for Halloween, the event will be held Friday, October 28th, from 6:00-7:30pm.
Kelly George is a Doctoral Student in Mass Media and Communication with a concentration in Disability Studies. Her dissertation research examines public memory of Pennhurst State School and Hospital in news media, in popular culture and in grassroots preservation efforts.
Ann Parsons is a PhD Candidate in History at the University of Illinois at Chicago, where she is a Graduate Fellow at the Institute for the Humanities. She studies the history of prisons and asylums in late twentieth century Pennsylvania.
In addition to this event, Temple Gallery is hosting a film screening, “Rare Haunted Horrors,” which runs from 8:00-Midnight. The films will be projected from 16mm reels and include One Frightened Night, Who Slew Auntie Rue, The Man They Could Not Hang, and other cartoons.
