An Irrepressible Conflict: The Empire State in the Civil War opened on September 22, at the New York State Museum to commemorate the sesquicentennial of the Civil War. The 7,000 square-foot exhibition focuses on the integral role New York played in the Civil War by virtue of its position as the wealthiest and most populous state in the Union.
The exhibition, which includes objects from the collections of the State Museum, Library and Archives, and other New York institutions is organized around three themes, Antebellum New York; The Civil War 1861-1865; and Reconstruction and Legacy, told through over 200 objects, documents, and images.
An Irrepressible Conflict runs through September 22, 2013 in Exhibition Hall and will be complemented by a variety of programs, including lectures, guided tours, and family activities. An online exhibition and web resources will be made available for students and teachers.
