Drexel University launched a new online database of the Atwater Kent Collection. The digital collection is available at Philadelphiahistory.org.
According to Drexel, The Atwater Kent Collection includes 13,000 historic artifacts and archival materials attributed to Philadelphia and American History. Drexel became the new trustee of the Collection in May 2022 and has since focused on moving the Collection to the Hamilton Building of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Center City, a comprehensive collection evaluation, and digitizing the Collection making it accessible to the public for the first time.
The new online database features over 1,000 objects on virtual display including items from the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) collection, George Washington’s writing desk, Abraham Lincoln’s hat, and Joe Frazier’s boxing gloves. Drexel plans to eventually make all items in the Collection accessible to the public and to use the Collection for education and learning.
