A nearly three hundred year old stone house in Bergen County, New Jersey will likely be demolished. 714 Godwin Avenue LLC has filed a request for a demolition permit for the Van Zile House in Wyckoff near Midland Park. The stone house was built in 1736 for Johannes van Zile. It is one of three historic houses, along with the Van Blarcom and Terhune Houses, that once were part of the same farm. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. The township, however, does not have a historic preservation ordinance that will protect it from demolition.
No plans for what will replace the house have been released by the developer. The township hopes some elements of the house will be incorporated into the new construction.
