New Freedom, New Lives: The 42nd Annual Conference on D.C. Historical Studies will take place on November 12-15, 2015. The Conference Committee of the Annual Conference on D.C. Historical Studies cordially invites presentations on all topics relating to the history of Metropolitan Washington, D.C., including nearby Maryland and Virginia as well as the federal government. Particularly welcome are complete sessions or papers addressing the theme of “New Freedoms, New Lives” as historians continue to reconsider the legacy of the Civil War, Reconstruction, Civil Rights struggles, and the waves of demographic changes on Washington and the nation. Presentations that compare D.C. to other urban centers are especially relevant and encouraged. (Submissions need not reflect the conference theme.)

Research Presentations
The committee will give precedence to panels presenting three or four papers, but individual papers will be considered as well. Submissions that propose innovative formats and that engage questions of teaching and learning are welcome. Don’t miss this opportunity to try out your ideas at this lively consideration of all things D.C.
Conference Format
Moderated panels take place on Friday and Saturday and last one hour and 15 minutes. Typically three speakers each take 20 minutes to present their research, followed by 10-15 minutes of discussion with audience participation. The reading of papers is strongly discouraged.
The conference opens on Thursday evening, November 12, with a speaker (to be announced) and an all-conference reception. Featured sessions this year are the Plenary Session on the status of D.C. Historical Studies and the Letitia Woods Brown Memorial Lecture honoring the memory of this pioneering scholar of African American history.
