The Gloria Richardson Humanities Initiative has issued a call for papers for its 2018 conference, Africans, African Americans, Academia, and Activism. The conference will be held on April 5-7 at Bowie State University in Bowie, Maryland to honor the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s assassination in 1968. That same day, then-Maryland Governor Spiro Agnew shut down Bowie State University, the state’s oldest historically black college, due to civil rights activities that led to the arrest of 228 protesting students. In light of these anniversaries, paper or panel proposals should address Africans, African-Americans and African diaspora involvement in college campus protest or education access activism. The deadline for submissions is March 10. See the Gloria Richardson Humanities Initiative’s announcement on H-Net.org for more details and submission instructions.
