The Organization of American Historians has issued a call for proposals for its 2019 conference, to be held in Philadelphia. The conference theme, “The Work of Freedom,” will mark the 400th anniversary of the arrival of enslaved Africans to the continent. Topics explored will be the price and labor involved in securing and gaining freedom across the nation’s history. Proposals may investigate any time period from the founding of the American colonies to the present day, and from a wide range of fields including economic, social, political, LGBT, African-American, Southern, and environmental history. Organizers hope that proposals will take advantage of the local history of Philadelphia as a site of struggles for freedom and equality, and they encourage the use of new digital humanities platforms in panels, roundtables, and workshops.
