Chicory, a magazine published by the city’s Enoch Pratt Free Library, circulated from 1966-1983. Filled with prose, poetry and artwork by residents of some of Baltimore’s poorest and majority African American neighborhoods, its mimeographed pages had been abandoned for decades in the library’s archives until Mary Rizzo, associate director of Public and Digital Humanities Initiatives at Rutgers University-Newark, saw them referenced in her research on cultural representations of the city and inquired about them at the library. According to Rutgers Today, Rizzo “has partnered with Pratt to bring the publication back to life, digitizing and making it available for a new generation of readers and cultural historians on the Digital Maryland website.”
